Murdock will begin library book curbside pickup and drop off at the Murdock bus port on Wednesday, September 9th. Pickup and drop-off will be every Wednesday from 12-2. Students will use Destiny at home (refer to below instructional videos) to put two books on hold that show the green IN status. We will pull those books and check them out to the student and then email parents to let them know the books are available for pickup. Holds placed by Monday at 8:00 am will be processed for that Wednesday’s pickup. Students may keep books for up to two weeks. Students who have overdue books will not be able to checkout new books, so it is important to return books within the two-week time frame.

I have set up access to Follett's Lightbox ebooks which are amazing. They have over 1000 titles that are all non-fiction and include embedded videos, and other interactive features. They usually cost about $40 a piece to access so I am grateful for Follett to be offering free access through June 2020.
If you find titles that you really love that help you teach your standards and would like me to purchase for our collection for next year, please let me know and I will do that. Have fun exploring! You might find just the right one for what you are teaching this quarter.
Password: follett Students at Murdock enjoyed having readers from our community come read to them. Five students from Hightower Trail Middle School read to classrooms. Pope High School students did Skype reading sessions. Mr. Banks visited Mrs. Frazier's third grade class and read two books to her students.
The Leader in Me door decorating contest was a blast. Students were excited to come up with a book, Leader in Me trait, and come up with creative ways to show that trait in their book. Here are the grade level winners' doors.
Students had a great time coming to the Library Learning Commons to do Dr. Seuss themed centers. Students put together puzzles, used cups to make the tallest Cat in the Hat hat they could, played memory and I Can Do That, participated in themed dress up each day and grade level trivia contests each day.
Laurel Snyder, author of Orphan Island, Bigger Than a Bread Box, My Jasper June, and over 30 other books, talked to third, fourth, and fifth graders today. A few aspiring student writers also got to have lunch with Laurel and talk books, writing, and being an author. Thank you, PTA, for sponsoring this author visit!
First grade students in Mrs. Shaw's class designed a symbol that represented the influential woman they had researched. Students came to the Library Learning Commons with their design and then used Perler Beads to create their symbol. Come by the Library Learning Commons to see their research reports and Perler Bead creations.
Coach Sloth gave six fantastic presentations to Murdock Elementary students. He began his visit with a magic trick, making the drawings and color illustrations in one of his books appear and disappear. Students were amazed! He told us a bit about his career as a football player and then later as an actor in a few movies that featured football scenes. He read to the students his book, Sammy Sloth Sports Superstar. He concluded his visit by having students act out his book, Hank the Bully. Students enjoyed his presentation very much. We greatly appreciated his visit to Murdock!
Mrs. Fragala and I had a blast dressing up as enchanted forest creatures during our recent book fair. Thanks to all the support from teachers, students, and families who came to the book fair to browse, shop, guess how many pieces of enchanted fairy food was in the jar, and participate in our Family Fun Night poster raffle. We can't wait to do it all again in the spring!
Brian Lies is a well written author and illustrator. He came to speak to our students as part of the Cobb EMC Literacy Week. A list of his work can be found here. |
